Activity, Installation and Equipment Symbol Fundamentals

Activity symbols are is used to identify friendly, enemy, or criminal actions that can reveal civic, ethnic, religious, social, or other grouping activities in an area of interest or operation that may affect unified land operations. Activity symbols have black boxes in each corner.

Installation symbols are sites that incorporate permanent, semipermanent, and temporary structures (think of something like a shipyard or electric power plant). Icons in the main sector reflect the main function of the symbol. Installation symbols have a black rectangle that sits above the base outline of the symbol.

Equipment symbols are nonexpendable items needed to outfit or equip an individual or organization (think of something like a tank or a rocket launcher). Equipment symbols for friendly units are represented as circular outlines. There are other special outline cases for equipment symbols when they are in flight.

Activity Symbols

Activity indicators are is used to identify friendly, enemy, or criminal actions that can reveal civic, ethnic, religious, social, or other grouping activities in an area of interest or operation that may affect unified land operations. Activity icons are identified by the black boxes in the corners of a symbol and can be used with many Sector 1 and Sector 2 modifiers. Activity symbols do not use amplifiers such as echelon, task force, or reinforced/reduced.

The main icons for activities include some military symbols and unique civilian symbols used in defense support of civil authorities (DSCA) and stability operations. Activity symbols provide the means to construct military and civilian symbols to identify individual and group activities (isolated personnel, civic, religious, social, and other groups). The use of unique civilian symbols is a recognition of the larger role of military forces beyond war fighting and reflect stability and support to civil authority activities around the world

Sector 1 Modifiers for Activity Symbols

Activities sector 1 modifiers denote crime, military information support operations, IED and incident qualifier categories. Sector 1 modifiers further identify affiliation, capability, special characteristic, or specialty. As with land unit symbols, they go above the main icon.

Transportation Mode Indicators for Equipment Symbols

There is a special case for Sector 2 modifiers for equipment symbols that you should know about. The mobility (transportation) mode indicator is only used to depict the mode of transport of equipment. For example, a symbol for an armored self-propelled howitzer transported by train would include a railway mobility mode indicator.
